The Californian Quail (Callipepla californica) is a small ground dwelling bird, with a curving crest or plume, made of six feathers, that droops forward. The plume is black in males and brown in females. They are hunted by bobcats, coyotes, squirrels, owls and snakes and are thus very short lived in the wild.
